Short Film
INITIAL IDEAS
We still wanted to incorporate slight themes of perfectionism and existentialism but mix it with a bit of comedy to keep it engaging
MAIN INSPIRATIONS

-
1950s

The guy who didn’t like musicals: The show follows Paul, an average guy who “doesn’t like musicals,” as the citizens of his town are gradually overcome by an alien hive mind that makes them sing and dance as if they are in a musical.
IDEA 1:
Ideas 1 and 2 came straight out of my head. MC gets invited home by the weird friend. They enter to find themselves suddenly in a sitcom with a cliche family dynamic. MC gets thrown off by the constant laughing tracks and lingo while the friend and his family look at him like there is nothing wrong.
IDEA 2:
Mix of comedy and mystery. Based on a very cliche wife and husband 1950s comedy dynamic. Husband gets home basic comedy comedy with wife put some things are off putting, some things the wife says, music stops you get the idea. The wife acts very stiff like a doll. In the end its revealed that the whole scenario is the husband's imagination and he is currently being held in a phyc ward. Husband had killed his wife and went crazy. Doctors check off on his lobotomy
IDEA 3:
After consulting with Gibbs AGAIN (there is no hope for you Saman), Saman pulled through with an idea bout a therapist comedy. I suggested to make the therapist unconventionally weird for the comedy aspect and that's how idea 3 was born. A goofy therapist with a very serious patient who is thoroughly confused with the therapists strange methods and questions (the contrast would create comedy)
IDEA 4:
I went to chat GPT for a vague idea and this is what it gave me: An insecure college student, overwhelmed by existential dread, spirals into a crisis when she’s forced to declare a major. With the clock ticking, a series of absurd encounters push her to question whether life has any meaning—or if she should just major in business like her mom keeps suggesting.
We decided to go for idea 3 and refine it for our main plot. The synopsis is as follows:
Sam suffers an existential crisis about the unpredictability of life. In an effort to cope, she finds an ad for a therapist. He looks quirky an odd vibe about him, but she decides to go for it anyway. Cut to her entering the therapist’s office. He’s there as weird as expected. Dressed and speaking eccentrically. Sam hesitantly still gives it a try. As the session goes on, the therapist’s remarks and exercises keep getting sillier - frustrating Sam who was looking for a serious session to find answers. The exercises grow to a height of absurdity, making Sam snap before the therapist blurts out an epiphany and everything locks into place for Sam. She’s overcome with shock about the newfound realisation and the surprise of the weird therapist actually being helpful. The therapist breaks the fourth wall to tell the audience of a job well done and the film ends there with a looney toons circle out transition.

SCRIPT
Saman sent me the first draft of our script after we decided on our idea.
I had a few changes in mind which I discussed with Saman and added them to the script in red.

Second and final Draft:

While filming we actually took our the initial flashback scenes due to time constraints
NAMING THE FILM
As stated before me and Saman are extremely indecisive when it comes to these things so we decided to piggy back off of a very common comedy film convention and named the film the name of the eccentric star of the show therapist.
Very simple and not a lot of thought process when into it but I feel like its quite a catchy name that suits the overall vibe of the film
Name of the film: Dr. Bootleg

LOCATION

My bedroom was our filming location again! But this time we decided to use more of it intead of limiting ourselves to the desk, aka the bed.
PROPS

Our main props

Some posters i found off of pinterest and printed to add to the office as my room is very bland

Flier
Making of the flier:
I utilized canva to create this flier and hand drew the little Dr.Bootleg character myself. I took heavy inspiration from 1950s illustrated posters

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Concept sketch I drew out
Sam, her struggles and her existential crisis stayed same for the most part, her hair got a bit longer as we changed actors.
Dr.Bootleg was a character that had to be created from scratch. We started from the idea of an eccentric and unconventional therapist who may seem silly and goofy but is actually really good at his job. Visualizing this concept was difficult but Saman gave me a great starting point as really wanted to play this character herself (and we all know I cant say no to her). Describing him is a very difficult thing because to be honest we wanted him to be more like a concept than an actual human being. We didn't want the audience to be able to tell his gender because he is literally goofy therapist personified and nothing else. He is a living concept. So he may have the voice of a woman but the moustache and attire of a man but he is literally just Dr.Bootleg. Naming him was pretty easy thanks to Saman's big brained mind:

sometimes her genius even scares me...

SOUND DESIGN
Guess what the main track of the film is...ITS ESCAPE. Yes we decided to take this song forward and use it in our intro and outro because it's just sooo good(Don't let that get to your head Saman). Another reason we kept the song was because how up beat it is, perfectly matching Dr. Bootleg's vibe.

The other back ground music used in the film were also recommended by Saman because she indeed has an old man opera playlist. Here is me and Saman hopping on call to discuss the music (her sending me spotify links):

Here are the tracks chosen for the background music:

BTS + BLOOPERS
While saman handled the editing of the short film I took over compiling a fun little video for the BTS and bloopers. It was really fun to make and edit. This was also our intro video posted on the instagram page. BTS of the BTS video:

EDITING
Saman was stuck in editing jail for days editing our main product. Go check out her blog for more details on that. Here is her in editing jail though:

COLOUR GRADING
Here is us discussing our colour grading options:

These were the options we narrowed down and the right most one was chosen as our final colour grading.

UNFINAL CUT (FEEDBACK AND CHALLENGES)
FEED BACK: We showed the teacher this un-final cut for her to get a rough idea of the film. This is also where we ran into one of our biggest challenges. The film wasn't engaging enough. We wracked our brains trying to think of a way to make the film more engaging but it was hard since we imagined the film to be dialogue centric only. Our teacher recommended I use my knowledge of animation and add visual elements like tiny animatics to the mix and so I got to work

ANIMATICS
I had previous knowledge of how to make animatics so i quickly got to work. Here is the rough template I used for the background:
